Big night for Shannons classic auction
Strong demand for Aussie, Brit and Euro offerings
Last night’s Shannons Sydney-Melbourne online classic auction pulled up with very solid results plus a few surprises.
If the bids tell us anything, it’s that the local classic market remains strong. That’s something confirmed by a number of dealers we’ve recently spoken to, who say sales are buoyant but getting good stock can be a challenge.
Ranking as an easy winner in the surprise stakes was a 1990 Holden VN HSV Group A SS (lot 138) that defied its $70,000 upper estimate by selling for $103,000. Perhaps a new benchmark for the model.
One of the buys of the event was a 1992 Ford EB Falcon GT (lot 137) which went for $53,000. That was above the top estimate of $50,000, but long-term we suspect it may turn out to be a very solid investment.
A 1974 Ford Capri RS3100 (lot 173) also pulled impressive money at $133,000.
Euro car watchers might have also got the odd jolt. A 1992 BMW 850i (lot 146) performed well at $53,000. To be fair, it was an exceptional example with a little over 80,000km on the odo.
A MkII Jaguar (lot 167) continued the recent trend for this model, with a very solid top bid of $66,000 – again, well above top estimate.
Most expensive lot for the night was the 1971 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 (lot 164) which went for $425,000, or about mid-estimate.
Highest-price Aussie for the night went to the 1977 Holden LX Torana A9X sedan, (lot 176), which changed hands at $196,000.
