41 YEAR OWNERSHIP TIME WARP CULT CLASSIC
The Volvo P1800 was Volvos second attempt at making a Sports Car, following the short lived, Fibreglass Bodied, Volvo Sport P1900. Launched 4 years later, in 1961, the P1800 styled at the Italian Frua Studio, was never intended to be a volume seller, instead, it was developed to attract people into the Showroom so that they could be sold a new Volvo Amazon or Duett.
The P1800, simply called the 1800 after 1963, was shot to stardom when it became the Co-Star to Roger Moore in the highly successful Spy Thriller television series, The Saint, which was filmed from 1962-1969. The rest was History as they say and a Cult Classic was born.
The 1800E was the final iteration of this very Stylish, Swedish Coupe, the carburettors had gone and Bosch D-Jetronic Fuel Injection took care of the induction and gave a useful boost in performance as well, 108bhp to 130bhp and the addition of 4 Wheel Disc Brakes to rein in that additional performance. By the end of production in 1973, a total of 39,407 Volvo 1800s were produced, making relatively rare, however, good engineering and solid build quality means that many survive and the most extreme example of this must be Irv Gordons 1966 1800S that by 2018 had driven over 5.23 million kilometres.
The Original Service Booklet shows that this Safari Yellow 1800E was delivered new by Volvo Distributors Ltd, Moorebank, NSW, to Michael Holbeche on the 26th of May 1971. It was then believed to have been purchased by the subsequent and most recent owner in 1982. Since new, this 1800E has only Travelled slightly more than 2,000 miles a year to a total of just over 105,000 miles.
The Safari Yellow coachwork of this 1800E is complemented by the Original Factory Steel/Alloy composite Clover Rim wheels. The Black interior with Brown carpets appears Original and reflects the Low Mileage that this Volvo has travelled in its 52 years. As would be expected in such a Fine Machine, there is a full Complement of Smiths gauges, a Heater and even a Rear Window Demister.
This Classic Coupé oozes Style and has become a Cult Classic in many parts of the World. This Safari Yellow 1800E is Ready to be Enjoyed by its next owner and is Ideal for a Sunday run to your Favourite Lunch spot, a longer Journey, perhaps a week away on the Coast and Practical enough for your Daily Commute.
