1970 Peugeot 404 Utility – Today’s Tempter

After a ute, but also something different? How about a Pininfarina-styled French one?

The Peugeot 404 launched in 1960, and throughout its enduring 15 years of production, forged a reputation for its durable mechanics.

Styled by Pininfarina, the 404 impressed journalists and road testers of the time with its amazing ride and handling. Front suspension was MacPherson struts, with coil spring and telescopic dampers all round, with an unusual rear axle comprising of a worm-drive with a torque tube.

Peugeot 404s were powered by a 1608cc inline-four with an all-synchro four-speed column-shift gearbox, while steering was a well-weighted rack-and-pinion system.

Beyond the sedan and stylish coupes and convertibles, Peugeot also offered a stretched-platform 404 in station wagon and utility guise.

With foreign assembly taking place in Australia, New Zealand and various African nations, the 404 was a global success for the French company with over 2.7 million sold.

This 404 Utility comes to market seemingly in good nick with the seller claiming that the Pug has been "refurbished from head to wheels", with the new owner needing "nothing to spend".

The 404 Utility appears presentable throughout, and shows some contemporary touches with its work-ready diamond plate tray, and carbon fibre headlight housings and front bumper.

Find a set of period wheels, some original chrome and perhaps a nice wooden bed; and you’d have yourself a pretty quirky classic ute!

Either way, it may appeal to someone after a fun small project, and it doesn’t break the bank.
