If you fancy yourself a throwback straight to the glory days of 1960s Australian motoring,  this time-warp 1966 HR Holden Special could be just the ticket.

Being an early ’66 model, this HR was one of the first to follow up the previous HD Holden, the HR copping a major reshape on both the front and rear compared to the HD.

It wasn’t all cosmetic changes either, the HR also featuring new ball joint front suspension and a wider track, while later build HRs also implemented basic safety upgrades.

The Special trim level means it’s a mid-range example, being a step above the HR Standard but second to the top of the range HR Premier.

It presents nicely, with two-tone white roof over blue paint, a basic but beautifully looked-after interior and the 186 six-banger red motor and three-speed column manual, something a lot of kids these days wouldn’t even know about!

At $30,000 it’s arguably modestly-priced in this climate of climbing classic car prices, and it’s the perfect candidate to slap some club permit/heritage registration on and cruise around to your local cars and coffee – or just hit the open road like your grandparents used to do.
