1984 HDT Magnum – Today’s Tempter

Brock’s high-performance take on a cross-continent cruiser

The HDT Magnum was a built-to-order cross-continent bruiser, commissioned by customers who provided a WB Statesmen in either DeVille or Caprice guise as a starting point. The fast and loose nature of HDT of the time – they were largely willing to build almost anything if you had the cheque – means most Magnums are a little bit different to the ones built before and after it.

It’s not clear how many were built – HDT owners say the number is under 100, but we’ve heard as under-120 from other sources. Either way, it’s not a lot.

Buyers who wanted a Magnum could option almost every aspect of the car, to great extent. It could be a minor warm-over, but to gain the prized HDT plate, you had to at least opt for the suspension and engine modifications.

This ‘84 HDT Magnum is said to be highly optioned, and was built off of a Statesman DeVille with electric windows, cruise control, sunroof and limited-slip differential.

It has travelled 253,000kms in its life, and is numbers-correct with books and history.

The car looks to be very original and unrestored; having said that its clearly lived much of its life on the road, with some slight rear end damage and some flaking paint on the driver’s side front fender.

It’s all there however; and the listing states that in 2012, and at 247,000kms – the owner spent $15,000 in reconditioning the "5.7 litre stroker engine" and transmission.

Unfortunately there isn’t much more info, but HDT Magnums are a rarity amongst the Brock catalogue. They rarely come up for sale, so if this is the real deal – it might be worth a look!

The car is based in Victoria and is listed for $44,000.
