Exotica doesn't have to cost a fortune

Okay, so maybe it's not a Lambo or Ferrari, but a Lotus Esprit in decent condition will provide much of the exotic car experience without commanding telephone number prices.

This 1988 Esprit Turbo priced at $42,950 is a good example.

The styling was done by Peter Stevens, who went on to work for McLaren, and represented a shift away from the previous hard-edged angular look of its predecessors.

There was also a significant improvement in the cabin layout, while the composite body employed some then innovative manufacturing techniques.

The mechanical package was updated but still fairly familiar, with the heart of it being a four-cylinder 2.0 turbocharged four matched to a Citroen or Renault-sourced five-speed manual.

Top speed was in the region of 240km/h.

This one is with Brooklands Classic Cars.

Feature - 40 years of Lotus Esprit
