1978 Holden HZ Panel Van – Today’s Tempter
Factory auto V8. Solid and presentable: good starting point for a project
The HZ, produced from 1978-1980, represented the last of the full-sized series that kicked off with the much-loved HQ. They were assembled in all four Holden plants across Australia, as well as screwed together in New Zealand.
Buyers could choose between sedans, wagons, vans and utilities; with a choice of the 202 straight-six, 253 V8 and 308 V8 engines, coupled with a three or four-speed manual or a three-speed auto.
The final HZ was arguably the dynamic highpoint for the series – transformed by ‘Radial Tuned Suspension’ (RTS) which tamed understeer and yielded a far more predictable and precise driving experience.
This HZ Panel Van for sale here is described as a factory V8 (253) auto, and is said to drive really well, with new front bushes, brakes, and door rubbers.
It’s presentable, with good paint (but not perfect, says the seller) and a few aftermarket modifications spied throughout – the listing also indicates that the car runs on LPG.
Overall, it’s all intact and looks to be in solid condition – it could be the perfect starting point for someone looking to pick up a pano and make it their own!
The car has no rego on it, and needs tires according to the seller.
It’s based in New South Wales and is listed for $27,000.
