1986 Mazda 929 Coupe – Today’s Tempter

Mazda 929 Mazda 929

Spiritual Cosmo successor, and one of Mazda’s more interesting designs

While it landed on our shores as the HB-series Mazda 929, this space-age coupe was known in its native homeland of Japan as the Mazda Luce (or badged as a Mazda Cosmo from select Mazda dealerships).

The Luce was traditionally Mazda’s large rear-drive passenger offering, with the HB generation available as a quintessentially-80s boxy sedan or wagon, but the one you want is the space-age coupe, complete with "Cosmo" pop-up headlights. It was a truly advanced car for the time, with electronically adjustable suspension and rack-and-pinion steering.

Over the lifespan of the series, they were powered by seemingly every engine configuration available; with two Wankel variants, a 2.2lt diesel, or 2.0lt petrol four-pots.

They came well equipped for the time; with air-conditioning, cruise control, central locking, power mirrors and windows, and radio cassette player as standard. The luxury pack further included alloy wheels and power steering.

This final-year 1986 Mazda is a locally-delivered version of the Luce coupe. Badged as a 929 and complete with the Cosmo’s pop-up headlights, the car presents as a rare and original example of one of Mazda’s most curious offerings.

It’s fitted with the 2.0lt four-pot petrol engine and a five-speed manual gearbox.

It’s a two-owner car and one of the nicest 929s we’ve come across (not that we come across them very often…). The seller describes the exterior as 8/10 with a few blemishes but good for its age, while the interior is described as a 10/10 time-warp affair.

With a full set of books, the car seems to come from a loving enthusiast and is a tremendously interesting oddball classic that we reckon deserves to be preserved!

The car is based in South Australia and is listed for $4,900!
