Capable performance, versatile packaging, and - before you say it - not as unreliable as you might think.
BMW’s E39 range-topping M5 is a highpoint in not just BMW’s own history; but a highpoint for all contemporary executive sedans at large.
It ostensibly lays claim as "the greatest sports sedan ever made", and as such are highly sought after with price rises reflecting as such. But while M5s have been priced out for many of us folk, mainstream 5 Series of this era offer an incredible amount of value as a future modern classic runabout.
Much of the M5 magic trickled down to the mainstream 5 Series models, and they remain a bargain buy with capable performance, versatile packaging, and - before you say it – better reliability than the usual perception of secondhand BMWs.
The 530I on sale here bears BMW’s lauded M54 inline-six; a peach of an engine and one that topped Ward’s AutoWorld Magazine’s 10 Best Engines two years on the trot in 2002 and 2003.
E39s have a mild notoriety for automatic gearbox issues but, from what we’ve seen, it’s a problem that most often befalls 540Is and 530Ds given their increased torque feature. And even then, maintenance is key in preventing most of these cars infamous issues.
This 530I looks to be in great condition, with clean interior and hard-to-fault exterior.
It looks to be in complete factory condition, and reportedly boasts a full and comprehensive service history. The listing indicates the odometer reading to be 22,500 – though if you’re interested, you may want to check that with the seller as it is incredibly low.
Even if it is an assumed 200,000+ odo, the car’s listed price of $9,950 is a fair sum for a car that’s been properly maintained. And should offer happy trouble-free motoring if all rings true with its maintenance records.
