Auction results - Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic
Holden HDT VK Blue Meanie

Tonight’s first Shannons auction for the year saw solid bidding, suggesting an upcoming federal election hasn’t necessarily slowed the market.

The star car was a 1985 HDT VK Blue Meanie (lot 81), which scored $165,000.

While the prices weren't as crazy as we've seen in recent years, good cars were generally fetching solid money, though there were some gems for the bargain-hunter.

A stand-out result was $38,000 for a very nicely-equipped Series 1 Land Rover (lot 17).

Two other UK cars to score well were high-quality roadsters, in the form of a Series 1 bug-eye Sprite and Series 1 MGB (lots 48 and 49), each of which sold for $44,000.

As for the bargains, they were hidden among the USA cars - see lots 35, 36 and 37 below. For example a Buick LeSabre convertible rolled out the door for just $9000.

Local cars did pretty well. A particularly good XW Falcon 500 six (lot 20) scored an impressive $35,000. At the other end of the market, a W427 HSV (lot 61) pulled a credible top bid of $98,000.

A very well-presented Ford XD ESP six (lot 79) sold for a strong $46,000.

Japanese cars were generally performing well, with the Toyota MR2 (lot 56) we previewed selling for $31,000.
