ONE OF THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN DELIVERED, BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED WITH MATCHING NUMBERS
In 1949 the new Volkswagen company launched the VW Type 2 Transporter, a vehicle that Revolutionised the Motoring World and was quickly Copied by many other Manufacturers around the Globe. VWs were launched in Australia 5 years later, in 1954, with Type 1 Beetles and Type 2 Transporters being sold. A total of 334 Type 2 Transporters (of all body types and varieties) were sold in Australia in 1954.
This September 1954 Matching Numbers Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter is a Kombi Van, often referred to as the 11 Window and is one of the very first to be sold in Australia, believed to have been delivered new in South Australia and has since 1959 only had 3 Owners. The term Kombi is short for Kombination, which meant that they could be used for Commercial or Passenger Transport, they have 3 Windows on each side of the Cargo Area and the Option of Removable Rear Seats. This Kombi does not have the Rear Seats but has the very Desirable option of Safari Windows, opening Front Windows that Hinge up from the top. Apart from the replaced Safari Windows, all of the glass in this Kombi is the Original Glass, fitted when this Type 2 was built at the Volkswagenwerk in Wolfsberg in Germany in September 1954.
Fresh from a full and Comprehensive Restoration, with the Body, Paint and Trim completed by the Healey Factory, this Kombi presents in Better Than New Condition in its Dove Blue coachwork with a Dark Grey interior. Being a pre-1955 model Transporter, this Type 2 is fitted with the Rear Barndoor, the term referring the large rear engine cover that was only used up until 1954, making the Barndoor Type 2 the Rarest and Most Sought after of all.
With a Full Mechanical Restoration, this Matching Numbers Type 2 is Delightfully Standard, as you would expect for a Type 2 in this condition with the 1192cc engine producing 30 BHP and driving through a 4 speed manual gearbox. Given that the Kombi is rated at a weight of 960kg it drives a lot better than may be expected and the Driving Experience is Engaging and Fun.
