This is one for the true enthusiast/restorer, an original example of the iconic Porsche 911 series. Even more significantly, this model year marks the last production of the naturally aspirated 3.2 litre 231 HP cars, which were replaced from 1986 with the 217 HP versions as specified for the American market.
Truly a rarity amongst collectors, this icon of the series also represented a triumph of auto engineering, featuring a stiffened chassis which didn't require a heavy roll-over protection structure like the Targa, in order to realise an open-top sports car variant which was structurally better handling than its Coupe and Targa siblings.
Performance, too, was brisk, with a zero to 100km/h sprint of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h. This beauty was no slouch then, or now, even against many of today's modern 'sporty' cars. It also famously starred in the 1984 American neo-noir romantic thriller movie "Against All Odds".
The example offered here features the factory-fitted 'Whale Tail' and is an original RHD model that was first purchased from the Porsche works in Stuttgart, Germany (in 1985), by its first owner (via an owner purchase scheme which was offered at that time). The car was then taken back to New Zealand by the new owner in 1986.
The current Australian owner, for years a true enthusiast of classic cars and motorcycles, later purchased this car from its last NZ owner, and brought it to Australia in 2010. It has since been garaged and driven on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Over its 39 years, the car has covered 203,651 klm (averaging just 5,222 klm for each year of its life), and is very straight for its age and use. Unlike many such 'specials', this example has been regularly driven.
The car starts, runs and drives well, and has wear and tear which would be expected for its age. An original Owner's Manual is included, and the toolkit comprises of original West German tools.
A full technical inspection and test was undertaken by a reputable Euro-car mechanic in March of this year, and a new higher-capacity battery installed late April. The car is offered with current Qld registration to 18 August 2024.
A new owner has the options of either continuing to use the car as it is and maintaining it in the normal manner or given its originality and good condition a complete restoration would be a reasonably straightforward prospect.
