Fast four-door
This qualifies as the original brute in a suit. Essentially Benz took its S-class luxo sedan and shoe-horned in the mighty 6.3lt V8 out of its top-of-the-line Grosser.
That was sufficient to give the car startling performance: a claimed 6.3 sec to 100km/h and a top speed nudging 230km/h. When it was launched, in 1968, it was the world’s fastest four-door sedan.
Of course it had every imaginable luxury, plus self-levelling and height-adjustable air suspension, and disc brakes all round.
Back in the day, this would have been the price of a good house and even now restoring one would be a formidable task.
This example has undergone a comprehensive restoration during its relatively recent history and presents in good shape. It’s with Lorbek at $129,990.
