BMW 840Ci - today's tempter
V8 GT coupe
When launched in 1989 (a little later in Australia) BMW’s E31 series was borderline spaceship.
It boasted a couple of firsts, including full-CAD development plus use of multiplex wiring and came bristling with features. Cost was a breath-taking $220,000 for the original V12, in Australia.
The V12s were not a commercial success for the company, despite the price, as the development cost was astronomical while sales were (thanks to a recession) relatively slow.
This 1997 V8 840Ci is a later development of the car and, while it lacks the bragging rights of the V12, is arguably a better powertrain with its 5-speed auto.
Optioned with M-technic gear, it claims relatively low miles at 146,000km.
Based at Albury-Wodonga, it’s on the market at $200,000.
