1990 Toyota MR2 - today's auction tempter
1990 Toyota MR2

If there were any justice, Toyota's mid-engined MR2 series should probably be worshipped as one of the best value sports cars on the market.

This is a relatively early second-gen (W20), which was popular as a race platform across much of Asia and Europe.

It may not be the most powerful car ever made, with its four-pot 2.0lt powerplant claimning around 165 horses, but the combo of a five-speed manual and a nice chassis made it an easy car to go out and play with.

The usual Toyota reputation for reliability applies, so long as the thing has been serviced.

This example is claiming just 55,000km and a well-documented history, which should help it to get premium money at the upcoming Shannons Melbourne auction.

It's carrying an estimate of $12,000-16,000, which we reckon is potentially a lot of fun for the dollar.
