A superb recreation of the formidable Maserati 450S, built by a highly regarded professional engineerThis is a tool room copy including the ladder chassis and all aluminium bodyStunning Rosso paintwork over Tan leather and polished Borranis4.9-litre V8 Maserati engine and a manual gearboxRarely do such well-engineered replicas come to marketOver the years Chris Lawrence of Wymondham Engineering in Norfolk built up a superb reputation for creating the very best and well-finished replicas of important sports cars. He was world renowned for excellent attention to detail and historical accuracy whilst tweaking slightly to ensure his creations were enjoyable to drive. He was the natural choice by the Swiss entrepreneur commissioned to complete an exclusive run of 250 GTOs when Mario Allegretti (formally regarded as the world's leading expert restoring original and recreating 250 GTOs) could no longer work on the project. Lawrences recreations are now highly sought after including his 250 SWBs,California Spiders, and Maserati 450S of which this is 1 of 9 in total. The Maserati 450S (Tipo 54) was a hugely competitive car in its day and led the field by two minutes during its competition debut in the Buenos Aries 1000kms, driven by Moss and Fangio until a minor fault with the gear linkage caused the car to retire. In the 1957 Mille Miglia, a 450S was the fastest car in the event but retired early with a faulty brake pedal. Whilst at the Nurburgring, Moss was enjoying a thirty-second lead when he was overtaken by his rear wheel after a half-shaft failure. Sadly, history will recall the 450S as a fabulous sports racer that failed to realise its full potential, seemingly always dogged by minor technical problems.Chris Lawrence put a great deal of research into ways the car's handling could be improved without losing the visceral qualities of the original. The ladder chassis was built using a jig from an original Maserati 450S chassis # 4510, while the all aluminium body was likewise reproducedusing bucks from # 4510. Lawrence even replicated the correct oval section tubing for the chassis. By strengthening the chassis, improving steering and suspension, and adding disc brakes he produced a real 'driver's car'.Built towards the end of the 1980s/early 90s, these high-spec recreations cost over 150,000 at the time but this piece of motoring art is available for less than half of that. At this guide price, its only competition would be a one bedroom flat in Huddersfield, and we think we know which option might be more fun. Not hugely practical in day to day terms, this is essentially a car to enjoy and we imagine that its new owner will want to appreciate the evocative driving characteristics of this amazing, powerful, open-top, V8 Maserati and with the wind in your hair and the bark from the side exhausts bouncing of the surrounding buildings, it wouldn't be hard to narrow your eyes and be transported back to the Mille Miglia in 1957.

A California car, this car was in the noted Blackhawk collection for many years in Danville California, prior to finding its way back to its home shores a couple of decades ago. This is a very original & honest car in fine order throughout & has not been the recipient of major restoration work. The interior is delightful & has a lovely feel to it. The car is finished in Jaguar cream with a red interior as specified on the heritage sheets. The paint has one or two minor age related cracks that do not detract in any way from the lovely overall appearance of the car. The car starts readily & the 3.4 litre motor pulls well & has good compression. Being an overdrive car it is long legged on the road running well in modern traffic. It sits on wire wheels retained by knock-off hubs. A full stainless steel exhaust has also been fitted along with recent master & slave cylinders. New brake pads & discs have also been fitted. Overall this is a good original car in fine order rather then a concours fresh out of restoration car. As such it has a lovely feel to it so missing in redone cars. The car comes with a good assortment of bills attesting to regular no expense spared maintenance since its return to the UK. This is one of the most unique Jaguar MKII's we have ever come across. This car has had a reported 60,000 spent on a major restoration and modifications enabling the car to be the ideal every day use MKII Jaguar. The beginning of the process was to find a suitable rust free car and the long term owner sourced a right hand drive New Zealand car that is in fact a very early 1959 manufactured car. The Jaguar, a 3.8 automatic was number 1500 off the production line and therefore a first year production car and this is confirmed with a Heritage trust letter. In 2002, now in the UK the rebuild began with a full strip down to bare metal .The body was found to be in excellent order and was prepared as necessary for a top class re-paint. The restoration was carried out by Grace Jaguar and James Watt Automotive in Staffordshire. James Watt spent almost 400 hours on the car prior it going to Hampton Coachtrimming for a full re-trim. Seats were re-trimmed in top quality leather and the headlining and sunvisorstrimmed in suede. A significant modification and part of the restoration was removing the running gear and replacing it with a 2.8 Nissan diesel engine and automatic gearbox enabling exceptional fuel economy and modern performance. Many years were spent restoring this fascinating car and since completion it has only covered 1400 miles. The car arrived with us having only covered 750 miles, most of this recently after the rebuild. Having been in dry storage with very little use over the past few years, a program of work totalling in the region of 4000 has been carried out and 650 miles of road testing has been covered. Work includes a full service, re-conditioned turbo, new subframe mountings, re-conditioned fuel tank, new glow plugs and control relay, new steering shaft UJ and the propshaft has been balanced. The car today presents superbly with its absolutely stunning straight bodyshell free from corrosion issues with beautiful top class metallic paintwork and gleaming chrome finishing the car offperfectly. Wire wheels are also excellent, the upholstery as expected with the low mileage since completion is beautiful and boasts impressive, expensively finished woodwork. On the road the Jaguar offers a totally different driving experience. The 2.8 modern engine is in excellent order, is responsive and offers impressive performance. The automatic gearbox changes smoothly and the handling and braking are top quality with upgraded brakes and power assisted steering. The cost of build is considerably more than the price offered thus offering an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for a heavily modified MKII Jaguar that is capable of daily use. Price: 49,995
