  • Auction: 29th June 2017 - Coys - Coys at Fontwell House

Designed by Alex Issigonis in 1959, a new concept in car design was born. With a monocoque shell, transversely mounted engine and front wheel drive, the new Mini, soon became popular across a broad spectrum of the population. The potential for competition use was soon seen by John Cooper; BMC were finally persuaded by John Cooper and the two worked together in culminating the birth of the Austin Mini Cooper and the Morris Mini Cooper in 1961. Victories in the 1964, 1965 and 1967 Monte-Carlo Rallies set the Mini on the road to fame but probably the greatest publicity was gained from their, somewhat unfair, disqualification for lighting irregularities in the 1966 event after coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A more powerful Mini Cooper, dubbed the S, was developed in tandem and released in 1963. Approximately 2,500 Mk.II Cooper S were built making it one of the rarest versions of this very collectible motor car. This beautiful example, one of the last Mark II Cooper S models produced, was first registeredby Lookers of Warrington to Liverpool Police Force in March of 1970. Liverpool and Bootle Constabulary purchased 27 Mini Cooper S cars each year from 1967 to 1971. These cars were used for one year only and then replaced by the following years cars. Records show that only 8 were registered for the Constabulary in 1970, with a mere 5 in Police livery. In recent times this Cooper S has benefitted from a huge no-expenses spared restoration to the tune of over 30,000, and finished in its original shade of Glacier White. A well known car within the owners club, the Mini can be dressed as a Police car within a few minutes, or used and enjoyed as a regular Cooper S. The Cooper is offered with a file of invoices and receipts, in addition to a Heritage Certificate and V5 document.Described by our vendor as being in truly excellent condition in all respects, this is a wonderful example of what has become a rare variant of the classic Cooper S. With interest in 1960s Mini Coopers still very much on the march,we are sure this car will prove to be a wise buy for the collector.
