1933 MG L1 Magna Following the highly successful My Type Midget, MG were to introduce a new line of small 6-cylinder models commencing with the F Type Magna, which was powered by a 1271cc engine which had first appeared in the Wolseley Hornet. The quest for smooth running was to see a number of manufacturers take the light six direction, which became a very popular genre for buyers of smaller cars who required refinement. MGs F1 model sold well with some 1250 being produced before the model was superseded by the L1, which was also a small four seat sports model, but was fitted with a modified engine sharing the shorter stroke of the K Series Magnette. Now displacing 1086cc, it was to boast a crossflow cylinder head which gave a welcome boost of power over the earlier F1 model, with a maximum speed of 75 mph - quite something for a car in the under 1100cc class in its day. Also available was a two-seater version, designated L2 along with a closed Salonette which was known as the Continental Coupe. As with the previous model, the L Types featured a stylish sloping radiator which added to the purposeful, sporting appearance. In total, 486 L1 models were built between 1933 - 1934. The L1 Magna we offer for sale here is of 1933 manufacture and was the subject of a restoration from the bare chassis, understood to have been carried out during the 1990s, there being a number of photos in the file showing the work in progress. Finished in Midnight Blue, this fine six-cylinder MG is of excellent appearance, with full weather equipment. Recently, a considerable amount of work has been undertaken by highly regarded MMM MG specialists, Baynton Jones. This included fitment of a fully rebuilt pre-selector gearbox. The list of work carried out and parts used is too extensive to list here, however, interested parties are welcome to request a copy. 1931 Alvis 12/50 TJ Atlantic Saloon Coachwork by Carbodies A delightful example of the much-loved 12/50, this motor car is one of the final TJ Series models. Chassis number 9074, it left the Works to be bodied with Atlantic Saloon coachwork by Carbodies, on 29th October 1931, bound for Agents Swallow & Milburn, of Newcastle Upon Tyne. It is known that the car was fitted with twin carburettors by the Works early the following year and subsequently used as a demonstrator. The comprehensive history is too extensive to list here, but, suffice to say it is most fascinating and follows the life of the car from its earliest days, through to the post war period, showing an engine overhaul in 1954, then progressing through the years to a major restoration carried out between 1983 92, with numerous photographs showing the work being undertaken. The car is finished in Sand and Black, close to the original livery, with the red leather interior having been renewed and today it is presented in exceptional condition, the quality of the restoration being clearly evident more than 25 years after completion. The car is featured in the hallowed tome - The Vintage Alvis by Peter Hull and Norman Johnson (pages 331 338) The original 12/50 Instruction Manual is also provided in the file, which contains one of the most detailed histories we have seen for some time, including the original Factory Build record. Delightful period features include the charming pillar-mounted front flashing indicators. In all, a very fine and usable thoroughbred sporting saloon with an impeccable pedigree, which will certainly delight its next custodian. Photographs will be taken as soon as it stops raining! 1927 Alvis TG 12/50 Three-quarter Coupe Of the many varied styles of coachwork available on the Alvis 12/50, without doubt one of the most charming and comfortable was the Three Quarter Coupe (Also often referred to as a Doctors Coupe) This motor car, being a TG Series, is one such example and reputedly one of just six known survivors with this style of coachwork. Of aluminium construction by Carbodies, it sports a number of delightful period features, including a fully lined hood and spring-loaded windows. With the hood erected, the car is a cosy as a saloon, with a wealth of leather and mahogany in the cabin. The Dickey seat also provides considerable space for luggage and there is also a locker immediately behind the front seat. A luggage rack is also fitted. Although the body has never been off the chassis, the car has been sympathetically restored a number of years ago, including a retrim in the original style. The hood and hood cover are both excellent and were fairly recent replacements. A vast quantity of bills etc are on file. What is also most pleasing about this car is the remarkable amount of carefully documented history, which goes right back to the original build sheet through to the present day. Shod with recently renewed Firestone tyres, the car has been regularly used in the current ownership, including trips to Angouleme and Normandy. As would be expected from a well maintained 12/50, Alice as she is known, cruises happily at 50 - 55 mph and has the sensible additions of flashing indicators and power take-off for satnav. To summarise, this is a delightful and extremely characterful Vintage Alvis that has benefited from much care over the years and is now eager to enter a new phase of her life. 1938 Riley 16/4 Special 1938 Riley 16/4 Special built on 12/4 Adelphi chassis 28AX7593 shortened and underslung at the rear similar to a Sprite. Runs on the 1938 Riley wide-track axles with large light-weight Hartford friction dampers. Brakes are the effective original type Girling rod system with the 13 drums. Currently running on 600x16 Avon Turbospeed tyres. A very rare 1939 Riley16hp 4-cylinder engine number 230 is fitted. Rebuilt in 2018 with new white-metal main bearings, new con-rods with shell-bearings, new high compression 4-ring domed pistons at +0.060. It has a Nuffield gearbox, a short cardan shaft and torque-tube with 4.1:1 cwp ratio fitted into the 1938 rear-axle banjo. Just 300 miles have been covered since the engine rebuild and the car will require running in. The body-frame is steel tube panelled in aluminium. The aluminium cycle wings are to the standard mid-thirties Riley competition style. Two aero-screens are fitted and there is a tonneau to cover to the cockpit and two bucket seats. The fuel tank is fitted in the tail, and is of about 9-galls capacity. A lockable boot is in the tail behind the seats. Electrics are 12-volt with belt driven dynamo. The battery is fitted behind the passenger seat. Flashing direction indicators are fitted and there is an electric cooling fan. The rolling chassis was acquired by the owner in 1973, with the rebuilding works taking many years to complete. The rebuilt 16hp engine was fitted in 2018 along with new clutch, cardan-shaft and re-cored radiator. The car handles extremely well, being well balanced and low-slung. The 16hp engine pulls as you would expect, giving very lively performance. It has been driven to Prescott and Silverstone many times, and climbed Kop Hill a few times managing the steep hill in top gear. Current V5C and VSCC Buff Form. 1954 EMW 327 Cabriolet The acquisition of the Dixi works at Eisenach in 1928 was to provide BMW, previously a manufacturer of aero engines and motorcycles, with a foothold in motor manufacturing. The BMW Dixi, a built-under-license version of the Austin Seven was gradually developed and improved, ending up with swing-axle suspension and overhead valves. By 1933, the first true BMW was introduced - the six-cylinder 303. The latter adopted a twin-tube frame and abandoned the rear swing axles in favour of a conventional live axle, while up front there was a superior transverse-leaf independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. These features, along with the four-bearing, overhead-valve engine, would provide the basis for the more powerful sporting models to follow. Making its debut in 1937, the 327 utilised the shortened, boxed, ladder-type chassis of the 326 Saloon, but with semi-elliptic rear springing in place of torsion bars. The gearbox was a Hurth four-speed manual unit with freewheel between 1st and 2nd gears, enabling clutchless gear changes at low speeds, while there were hydraulic brakes all round. BMW's pushrod six-cylinder unit had by now been enlarged to 1,971cc, developing 55bhp in the 327, which could also be ordered with the 328 sports car's 80bhp unit at extra cost. After WW2 in 1945, BMW's factory at Eisenach ended up behind the Iron Curtain, but rather than strip it bare - their usual treatment of valuable German assets - the occupying Russians chose to restart production of pre-war designs. Both cars and motorcycles were made bearing BMW's distinctive blue and white quartered emblem until a successful legal action in 1950 saw the Munich firm successfully reassert its rights to the trademark. As a result, the Eastern Bloc offshoot adopted the name 'EMW' (Eisenacher Motoren Werke) and changed the blue sections of its badge to red. As its name suggests, the EMW 327 was a continuation of the pre-war BMW 327 coupé and cabriolet, and was virtually identical to its ancestor apart from having front-hinged doors. Production continued until 1956 when the company, now known as VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, dropped its old BMW-based models and began manufacturing the new Wartburg. Strikingly finished in red and cream, with cream leather interior trim, this 1954 EMW 327 Cabriolet was imported some 30 years ago whereupon it underwent extensive restoration work. During the past five years it has been in the care of a knowledgeable BMW enthusiast and formed part of a small collection. Regularly maintained and cared for, the car presents very well. On the road, it feels precise, being shod with modern radial tyres. The lined hood fits well, and although quite elderly, it is understood to be totally weatherproof. A classic design in the true sense of the term, this is a rare motor car in the UK and is offered with a considerable amount of paperwork, which includes details of restoration work, bills, copies of original sales brochure, and a list of recent maintenance work undertaken. There is a current MOT certificate valid until February 2021. Awaiting preparation - and additional photographs and a video will be updated as soon as it stops raining!
