"It’s always an exciting time handing over one of our give-away cars" enthused Unique Cars’ Uncle Phil as we prepared to hand over the keys to the winner of our most recent car. Our fabulous competition-style prepared 1964½ Mustang valued at $80,000 was centre of attention for everyone who came near the car.

The winner is Greg Anderson, a farmer from Dowerin, which is 170km east of Perth, most famous for the Dowerin Field Days. The wheatbelt town of 850 people does have a motorsport history, having hosted races between 1929 and 1939, and boasts its own Dowerin Car Club these days.

And in the best small town tradition, word of Greg’s win had spread quickly – thanks to his wife’s Facebook mention of the win. "Some people thought he’d won a model, not a real car." she says with a wry smile.

"Everyone around town knows I’ve won the Mustang" Greg said at the hand-over, "and they keep asking me where the damned car is!"

On hearing that her Dad had won the Mustang, daughter Emma, a Falcon-driving university student, exclaimed "When you drop dead Dad, it’s mine!"

Fortuitously Greg is a bit of a Ford fan and has a ZG Fairlane in the shed alongside a rare Volkswagen Country Buggy, awaiting restoration.

"There’s a gravel road out to the farm and I don’t want to get any chips in the paint." Greg explained, "but luckily we’ve got a garage in town where we’ll keep the Mustang". He readily admits that there will be more reason to go into town now.

When we filled the car’s fuel tank before the Anderson’s headed off in the Mustang, a young man came over to admire the car "This is the Mustang you can win from Unique Cars isn’t it?" he asked. "Well it was," I told him, "and here’s the lucky man who’s just won it." I said, pointing to a beaming Greg. The man bounded up to Greg with a huge grin and shook his hand "Congratulations mate, you lucky bugger – I really wanted to win this car".

At the hand-over representatives from three of the car’s supporters were present, with Graham Powell representing Shannons, Morten Andersen from Penrite and Rodney De Silva from Mothers, each company providing a year’s supply of products and support. All were thoroughly impressed on seeing the Mustang for the first time – the effort that had gone into its restoration giving a gleaming result.

"I’ve been a Unique Cars subscriber for years and always look forward to reading it." said Greg, describing the win he’s had as icing on the cake for so many years of enjoying the magazine.

There was certainly nervous excitement at the handover, just outside Perth. "I said to my wife that with 430 horsepower, I don’t really need that much grunt, but it’s nice to have." His first drive showed there was nothing to be nervous about, Greg having no issues cruising around in the car before heading off on the long drive home – smiling all the way.
