The launch of the W221 series was a major leap for Mercedes-Benz, giving its premium S class an aggressive new look and a major update when it came to dynamics.

It resulted in strong world-wide sales and some very positive reviews. Among them was this from the RAC in the UK: "Although the likes of Maybach, Rolls-Royce and Bentley have now taken the super-luxury saloon beyond the scope of the Mercedes S-Class, it retains its title as the best car in the world, or the 'real world' at least."
