Legendary design
It doesn't matter who you are or what your usual car preferences might be, Ford's GT40 will hold some visceral appeal to the petrol-head in you.
In a feature on the design we noted: "It was a car born of revenge, built out of spite, that went on to become one of the most successful – and most beautiful – endurance racecars of all time. The Ford GT40 combined catwalk looks with speed that the fastest European sports prototypes of the ’60s couldn’t match."
Getting hold of a real 1960s version is difficult and prohibitively expensive. Now, even the modern generations of Ford-built tribute cars of the 2000s have become collectibles in their own right and are commanding big prices.
For decades there has been an international industry in building replicas, with a few based in Australia.
This Gold Coast-built car is running a 4.6lt V8 Cobra engine out of a Mustang, matched to a five-speed manual transmission.
It's with Prestige Motor Gallery in Sydney at $154,990.
