First of the Zeds

Back in the 1990s, BMW was limbering up for a new range of two-seater roadsters, dubbed the Z series – and this was the pioneer model.

The Z1’s most distinctive feature was the drop-down doors which disappeared into the deep sills, a feature credited to lead designer Harm Lagaay.

Mechanically, the car was mainstream BMW, with the lively 2.5lt straight six under the bonnet claiming 168hp (125kW), matched to a five-speed manual transmission.

This example featured in issue 484 of Unique Cars magazine and is thought to be the only registered Z1 in Australia.

It’s number 148 of approximately 8000 produced. Located in Victoria, it’s on the market for $125,000.
