The ute the factory should have built

With the benefit of hindsight, you can’t help but wonder why Chrysler didn’t get around to building a Pacer version of the VF-VG Wayfarer ute series. Surely it would have sold like the proverbial hotcakes?

In a feature on the VG series, Cliff Chambers notes: "A year after the original VF model was launched came a restyled and more refined VG. This was the car that Chrysler believed had the combination of power, light weight and keen pricing to fight off the opposition’s Toranas and V8 Falcons.

"The basic engine was a 4.0-litre, 245 cubic inch six with
a two-barrel (2bbl) carburettor and 138kW. Three-speed transmission was standard (with auto optional) as were four doors. The VG was also the only Pacer available as a two-door Hardtop."

The creative soul who put this Pacer tribute ute together went for a reasonably high spec. Under the bonnet is a 265 (4.3lt) six that claims to be running an E49 cam and 500cfm Holley carburetor. That’s tied to a four-speed Borg Warner manual.
