Happy classic

Volkswagen Beetles in their original air-cooled rear-engine form remain one of those cars that bring a smile to people's faces, decades after they first began scuttling about on our roads.

While the overall configuration has its challenges when it comes to handling, there is no question millions of people have derived huge joy from them and continue to today.

The sheer simplicity of the design makes them easy and inexpensive to work on, while there's an apparently limitless support indiustry out there for them. They're rare in enjoying the contradiction of having cult car status while being made in huge numbers.

This example looks a little tempting as it claims 94,000 miles with a service history and a recent restoration. The seller offers progress shots of the resto plus a roadworthy certificate.

It's running the original 1500 engine with a four-speed manual transmission.

Located in Melbourne, it's on the market at $18,250.

We've published a huge number of Beetle stories over time and two of our key contributors - Dave Morley and Glenn Torrens – own one. See this search for more reading.
