1958 Land Rover series 1 - today's tempter
Living legend
If you have even the slightest interest in 4x4 classics, you’ll be familiar with much of the Land Rover story. Aimed at civilian users, but with some military influences, the remarkable machines were a post-WWII success story and early ones have become highly desirable collectibles.
In our feature celebrating the series, we comment: "Although they were designed for use as civilian vehicles, there were certainly some military influences. Wilkes was partly inspired by the Jeep, and the Land Rover’s construction materials were dictated by post-war shortages. Steel was in short supply, so the bodywork was built with a lightweight aluminium alloy called Birmabright.
"Because the material lasts so well, Series 1 owners also tend to describe other brands of 4WD as ‘disposables’."
This 1958 example claims a four-year restoration. It’s a Series I 88 (2.0lt four-speed) and the owner in Tasmania is looking for offers over $45,000.
