It was in 1922 that Archibald Frazer Nash left GN. the company he had co-founded with Henry Godfrey. and established his own eponymous venture in Kingston-upon-Thames. The initial chain drive examples were a logical development of the GN models. However. within five years. the business was in trouble and went into receivership. re-emerging as AFN Ltd. By 1929. H. J. Aldington had become its major shareholder and was running the company with his brothers Donald and William. During 1934 it became the UK importer and assembler of the BMW marque, the results of which were sold as Frazer Nash-BMWs. Following WWII. the company created a number of new models including the High Speed. Mille Miglia. Targa Florio. Le Mans Coupé and the Sebring. all of which were in essence evolutions of the BMW 328. As its name suggests. the High Speed was a no-nonsense lightweight competition version that featured minimal bodywork and cycle wings. It was powered by the 1971cc straight-six BMW unit that had been developed by Bristol under licence from AFN. This was mated to a Bristol four-speed manual gearbox. Suspension was independent at the front by transverse leaf spring and by live axle and torsion bars at the rear. With some 125bhp powering a two-seater of just 635kg. the performance was predictably impressive. and the High Speed was capable of achieving the 0-60mph sprint in around 8. 8 seconds and powering on to a terminal speed of some 110mph. It was a High Speed that AFN entered for the first post-WWII Le Mans 24 Hours race held in 1949. The result was memorable with H. J. Aldington and co-driver Norman Culpan finishing a magnificent third overall. This prompted the company to rebrand the High Speed as a Le Mans Replica - thereby resurrecting a type of nomenclature from its past. The model was immortalised at the hands of such racing legends as Stirling Moss. Roy Salvadori. Tony Brooks and Tony Crook of Bristol Cars fame. And. bearing in mind a total of just 34 examples of the High Speed/Le Mans Replica were built before production ceased in 1953. these cars are now highly prized by collectors. Moreover. with demand falling some way short of supply. a market for quality evocations of the Le Mans Replica has understandably evolved over the years. A small batch was constructed by the renowned restorers Crosthwaite & Gardiner. A further series of some 11 cars were also built in 1990 by Werner Oswald. reputedly based on a Mk. I Le Mans Replica owned at the time by well-known collector and historic racer. Frank Sytner. Never offered in fully assembled form. they were sold as kits leading to them being known as 'WOK's - i. e. Werner Oswald Kits. During the production phase it was discovered that the name Frazer Nash Cars had remained dormant for a number of years and so was duly purchased by the company in order to legitimately allow its products to be advertised as `made by Frazer Nash Cars`. The Le Mans Replica we are selling today is 'WOK1'; Oswald`s personal prototype. manufactured in 1988 and employing parts. as required. from a Bristol 405. Once finished with by its constructors. it was apparently purchased by Peter Mann and then subsequently owned in turn by Bob Beck and Robert Brock of Buxton. Sporting black coachwork and black interior trim. `625 PP0` has been treated to a considerable amount of remedial work in the last years courtesy of Spencer Lane Jones. This has included a gearbox overhaul and the fitting of high-ratio gears. the refurbishment of the cylinder head. oil pressure relief valve. trio of downdraught Solex carburettors. clutch (new centre plate). brakes. steering column and rear suspension. Commenting on the condition of the Frazer Nash, Spencer Lane Jones said: "When we last test drove the car in February 2011. it was an extremely good example of such a model and the owner was very good at constantly improving it. " This well-presented and extremely competitive example is being sold with FIA Appendix K papers as well as an HTP passport that make it eligible for most of the world's high-profile historic racing events. UK road registered and with a comprehensive history. This represents extremely interesting access to Goodwood & other historic events. Introduced in 1953, the Le Mans Coupe was the first closed production car from Frazer Nash. In essence a Targa Florio with a hard top, the coupe used the new parallel-tube chassis frame, wrapped in a striking alloy body. Independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and torsion bar rear suspension, the engine was, of course, the 2 Litre Bristol unit beloved by Frazer Nash. Of the nine cars completed, three would race at Le Mans, the Coupe taking its name from the success of the prototype in 1953. FN197 was the penultimate of nine Le Mans Coupe's, with first owner Anthony Twentyman lending the coupe to AFN for the 1954 Earls Court Motor Show. Correspondence on file shows the engine was specially built by Bristol for the car, upgraded from 7.5 to 8.5.1 compression ratio. The non-standard factory options included adjustable radiator slats, centre lock wheels, Al-fin brake drums, adjustable sliding seats and a 'fly off' handbrake. Twentyman competed in FN197 throughout 1955-56, advertising itfor sale in Bugantics with 24,000 miles in 1957. The second owner, F.P. Preece continued to campaign the Coupe at Prescott from 1958-60, whilst he third owner, Anthony Manuael, kept it for over 30 years until his death in 1995. The Frazer Nash, which by that point had been laid up for 20 of those years, was sold at the Brooks Olympia auction (the catalogue describing it as 'time-warp') in April 1995 to Gerry Montpellier of Lille, France. Richard Pilkington secured it at the 1999 Retromobile auction in France, before it was Bought in April 2001 by Peter Jay who restored to an exceptional level. This highly original coupe is eligible for numerous events including the Mille Miglia, Le Mans Classic and Goodwood.

  • Auction: 18th Aug 2017 - RM Auctions - Monterey Auction

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sotheby's Monterey event, August 18-19, 2017.Estimate:$500,000 - $700,000 USA stunning British coachbuilt BMW 328A veteran of the 1949 Spa 24 HoursPreviously owned by well-known amateur driver "Dickie" StoopAccepted by the VSCC as a pre-war sports car; eligible for a variety of racing eventsThe first modern sports car, the BMW 328 was a marvel of engineering. Unlike other German cars, which utilized steel rail chassis, BMW had perfected the light tubular chassis with welded floors, allowing the use of softer springs and shock absorbers, making cornering a circuit lightning fast. Add to this frame the engine block and brakes from the BMW 326 and one had nearly reached perfection. The final touch came from a power boost via a completely redesigned cylinder head, which utilizes one lateral camshaft high on the left side, with valves inclined at 90 degrees and the spark plug in the center. The 328 offered here is one of six chassis that were imported to England bytheAldington Brothers under the name of Frazer Nash in the autumn of 1939. With the immediate onset of World War II, the vehicles were impounded and stored by British Customs and Excise, not to be seen until 1946.As confirmed by the Frazer Nash Archives, chassis number 85427 was purchased post-war by former RAF Spitfire pilot "Dickie" Stoop, a Frazer Nash Works driver. Stoop commissioned a bespoke envelope body for his new Frazer Nash-BMW from Leacroft of Egham. As an ode to his piloting background, the body featured many aeronautical features - the aircraft-type bonnet clips and flush-capped fuel filler among them - as well as a cockpit sized to accommodate Stoop's stocky frame.Partnered with his friend Peter Wilson, Stoop entered 85427 in the 1949 Spa 24-Hour race held at the Circuit National at Spa-Francorchamps, taking 6th in class and 12th overall. Dickie later sold the 328 back to AFN Limited in 1952 in exchange for a Frazer Nash Mille Miglia. The history of this Frazer Nash-BMW is unknownfrom1952 through 1988, when it resurfaced for sale, and was subsequently purchased by the Swiss Rosso Bianco Collection. Maintained for display, chassis 85427 underwent a restoration during the Collection's ownership. With the sale of the Rosso Bianco Collection to the Louwman Museum in 2006, the vehicle was soon thereafter sold into its current ownership. It has most recently been exhibited at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. Highly eligible and with a proper period competition pedigree from Dickie Stoop, one of the most significant names in Frazer Nash lore, this this would be a wonderful addition to any collection, particularly one focused on the most unique of BMWs.
