A truly spectacular example of these wonderfully elegant 'slope back' Bentley Continental's - and most unusually this one sports a pair of rear wheel Spats too The history folder is quite excellent, with original correspondence from the very earliest portion of BC41BG's life Originally supplied through Mayfair and World renowned dealership Jack Barclay there are within the folder many service records, internal memorandums and also the original sales contract - its all really quite charming to behold The first owner exchanged his 'D' series 'R' Type Continental plus a wad of money for this, the then latest and most up to date Continental available at the time - how times change and now his original car is worth twice the value of this, the replacement I wonder which is really the better car - the S1 Fastback is certainly far rarer than the 'R' Type Continental JB's supplied her to the first 3 owners, it would seem from the papers and serviced her throughout - by 1960 over 52.000 miles had been covered It's funny how many visitors ask us here in the Mews whether these old cars can cope with regular use - when you look at the number of vehicles which have covered over 17.000 per annum, like this did in the first 3 years, it really makes one wonder what they thought these cars, or their owners, did all those years ago? The last two custodians of BC41BG are very well known to us here in Kensington, the former carrying out a full suspension overhaul as well as a complete engine rebuild at his local specialists near to his home in Colchester (5.000 miles only since these works were completed) and the most recent engaged us to strip her to bare metal, repaint her beautifully (making the new rear wheel Spats at this time) and also to completely re-trim the interior and boot compartments She presents, almost to perfection, whilst on the road she performs with quite astonishing aplomb - the freshly rebuilt engine is delightfully quiet and smooth, matching perfectly the seemless gearbox operation The interior is, to quote the wonderful Noel Coward, "quite devine" and a most comfortable place in which to travel; again it has to be acknowledged that the S1 Continental does take a lot of beating All in all this is one of the very nicest, if not possibly the very nicest, Fastback S1 we have come across and for the next custodian, we can confirm she gathers rather a lot of attention, from all the right people and in just the right way too

The success of the R Type Continental between 1952 and 1955 lead to the creation of the S1 Continental chassis, which was released in April of 1955. For the first time Bentley enthusiasts had a greater choice of coachwork designs to choose from with H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward responsible for bodying the majority of the S1 Continentals produced. One of the most popular designs was the fastback coachwork by H.J. Mulliner, built to design number 7400. It was modified to fit the 3 inch longer S1 Continental chassis and in styling terms was adapted further from the R Type Continental with a raised front wingline and less bulbous rear wings with a higher line which were finished with stylish new swage lines. Chassis number BC33CH which we are currently offering for sale is one of just ninety seven cars built to Design No 7400 in right hand drive by H.J.Mulliner between 1955 and 1959. It was originally completed in September of 1957, finished unusually in two tone paint. It was ordered by Mr VernonSangster through H.R.Owen in shell grey over circassian blue with a light blue leather interior and then delivered to his home in Cheshire. Being a CH Series car, it also benefits from all of the later upgrades at the factory, including power steering, dual brake reservoirs and the larger carburettors. The car was subsequently owned by Mr K Green of Oxshott in Surrey in the 1980s and 1990s, Mr C Murphy of Norfolk between 2001 and 2003 and Dr R Harely of Worcestershire from 2003. The most recent owner purchased the car, then in Tudor grey and used it for a few years until 2011 when he decided to improve it further, instructing a full coachwork restoration. The coachwork was restored and then re-painted from bare metal to concours standard in shell grey. Since 2011, the car has been driven sparingly, never in the rain and mechanically maintained by Frank Dale & Stepsons each year. Previous servicing records show the car was maintained by the likes of Broughtons of Cheltenham and also P&A Wood.Approximately five years after the completion of the coachwork restoration, the car still looks absolutely magnificent. It comes complete with copy chassis cards, maintenance records, handbook and tools. This ever popular model continues to find favour with collectors and enthusiasts all over the world and BC33CH is an example we are very proud to offer for sale.

  • Auction: 24th/25th Aug 2018 - RM Sotheby's - Monterey Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Monterey event, 24 - 25 August 2018. The most renowned body on this chassis; one of 22 left-hand-drive examplesFascinating history; special-ordered by a Cuban socialiteMany unique bespoke features from new, including rear-mounted sparePeriod air conditioning and fitted luggageLess than 52,000 actual milesConcours-ready in every regard The name Continental, then as now, has acquired cult-like status among Bentley enthusiasts. It was originally designated to a special Bentley designed to slip through the air effortlessly, while demonstrating impeccable road manners and impressive performance. Whether being driven in congested city traffic or long-distance, high-speed touring, the S1 Continental delivers on that promise, particularly in the lightweight fastback sports saloon body by H.J. Mulliner, derived from the famous design used on most of the earlier R-Type Continentals, and crafted with weight reduction and chassis stability for long-distance touringfirmly in mind. That it was a beautiful car, with extended, elegant lines with pronounced rear fins, giving it a visual sensation of speed even when parked, did not hurt, either. This particular S1 Continental sports saloon, chassis no. BC4LDJ, is one of only 22 left-hand-drive examples produced to this design, and is a perfect example of if a car could talk. It was special-ordered by Josefina Tarafa, heiress to Cuban sugar magnate Oscar B. Cintas and a well-known photographer and socialite of the era, who made her home in Connecticut.Build records, which accompany the car, note Ms. Tarafas numerous specially requested features, including high-speed driving headlamps, air horns, a unique spare wheel carrier, swiveling front ventilator windows, additional ventilation ducting and rainshields, interior reading lights, an eight-day winding clock, an altimeter, and a radio. The interior was practically a study on four wheels, with lockable front cabinets, ashtrays for all four passengers, map pockets, and window curtains, while the body was originally finished, appropriately enough, in very very dark rich brown . . . . Havana Brown, one might say.The completed car was shipped not by ocean freighter but by Silver City Airways, a private British independent airline specializing in transporting luxury vehicles, from England to New York City, where its new owner took delivery. It appears that she owned the car until May 1976, when it was sold to Fred Sutherland of Los Angeles, showing 65,000 km on the odometer, or 40,389 miles, and still in its original livery.Dr. Patrick Mauer, also of Los Angeles, acquired the car from Mr. Sutherland. During Dr. Mauers ownership the car was featured in an article in Connoisseur magazine, in 1988. He offered the car for sale in 1990, and it was purchased by Bentley specialist, Richard Gorman, of Miamis Vantage Motorworks. Mr. Gorman used the car personally for about six years, until he sold it to Craig Zinn of Hollywood, Florida. At this time, the odometer showed72,272 km, or 44,907 miles. In 2002, the car was sent back to Vantage Motorworks, where it was refinished in Masons Black lacquer, and the interior was retrimmed using Rolls-Royces famous Connolly leather in tan. The well-preserved burled walnut interior trim was restored to concours standards, appropriate mechanical restoration was also performed, and finally a rare period-correct air-conditioning system was acquired and installed as it would have been done by Bentley in 1958.In 2007 it was purchased by Jean Pierre Slavic who transported the car to his home on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. While there, mechanical restoration was completed, and a complete set of exquisite fitted leather luggage was made to fit precisely in the cars boot. It was driven about 2,000 km while in Switzerland. A year later, showing 82,780 km, it was added to its current owners splendid collection.Presented here in deep brilliant Masons Black, buttery leather interior, and exquisite walnut trim, it is in splendid conditioncosmetically and mechanically, and is offered with its original owners handbook, six-piece set of fitted luggage, hand and road tools, build sheets, chassis cards, and shipping manifests, among many fascinating documents that tell its story and validate its exceptional provenance. The manual is particularly of note, as it is the original numbered to this car and has seven typed pages of instructions specific to this car, included by the factory.A show-stopping classic, this highly desirable Continental is bound to turn heads today, just as it did nearly 50 years ago. You might have said the same about Josefina. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/MO18.

The tremendous success Bentley enjoyed with the R Type Continental continued onto the S Series chassis in late 1955 with a range of new bodies available to collectors. The Park Ward fixed head coupe was originally the brain child of legendary coachwork designer John Blatchley who had been largely responsible for the styling of the R Type Continental by H.J. Mulliner. Six R Type Continental chassis were delivered to the Park Ward works who were then owned by Rolls-Royce. Blatchley was given the task of styling the four drophead coupes and the two further fixed head coupes on the R Type Continental chassis, a design which was later slightly adapted for the marginally longer S1 Continental chassis. Chassis No BC24AF is one of just forty five examples built by Park Ward to Design No 701 in right hand drive on the S1 Continental chassis. It was originally completed in July of 1956, finished in silver and green with a green leather interior. It was then supplied to its first owner, Mr M.L.Marsh ofStratford on Avon. The car remained in the UK until 1968 when it was supplied by Paddon Brothers Ltd to a Mr H Zanger of the United States. It remained in the Massachusetts area until 1989 until repatriated and subsequently restored by P.J. Fischer in his London facility. During the very high quality restoration this fine motor car benefited from a bare metal re-paint in pewter and re-trim in green Connolly hides. From this point the car remained in the UK and has been owned by several collectors, having been supplied on more than one occasion by Frank Dale & Stepsons. The history file is extensive and documents that cars maintenance history from the 1960s onwards, with dozens of invoices detailing the works carried out. Most recently in early 2018 the car benefited from a thorough mechanical review with the prep work costing around thirty thousand pounds, all carried out by a noted Bentley specialist. The car also benefits from the addition of power steering and air conditioning, making it anideal long distance tourer in any climate. Interestingly enough this motor car is a previous class winner at the Louis Vuitton Concours, highlighting this beautiful examples condition and pedigree. It is complete with aforementioned detailed history file, original coachwork instructions, handbook and complete tools. Frank Dale & Stepsons have previously supplied this superb motor car and are delighted to be able to offer it for sale once again.
