Vintage and Prestige are proud to offer this 1934 Austin 20hp (20/6) Ranelagh For Sale. Registration no: EO 5653 Chassis no: 5368 Engine no: 5636/6 Mileage shown: 8817 General Manager of the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company, Herbert Austin set the Birmingham firm on the road to motor manufacture in 1896 when he designed its first automobile, a twin-cylinder tri-car. The first production Wolseley though, was four-wheeled and, like Austin's 1896 prototype, carried its single-cylinder engine horizontally. Wolseley's directors did not share Austin's belief in the horizontal engine's virtues however, and he departed in 1905 to set up his own company at nearby Longbridge. Somewhat surprisingly perhaps, the first Austin cars were powered by conventional inline fours with side valves arranged in 'T-head' fashion. During The Great War, Austin manufactured munitions and expanded greatly as a result, employing more than 22,000 workers by the cessation of hostilities in 1918. Austin introduced its big 20hp model in 1919, a car heavily influenced by a Hudson Super Six that Herbert Austin drove during the war. Incorporating many of the Hudson features that had so impressed the Austin boss, the Twenty was powered by a lusty 3.6-litre four-cylinder engine with a cast-iron block, a detachable cylinder head and an aluminium crankcase. Driving through a four-speed gearbox it developed 45bhp at 2,000rpm and could lope along at a genuine 70mph. In 1926 it was replaced by a six-cylinder version, the 20/6, now with a smoother 3.4-litre engine and braking to all four wheels. Spacious and imposing with real road presence, it came in a variety of saloon, landaulette and limousine body styles and was aimed mainly at the chauffeur-driven classes. Offered for sale in beautifully restored condition, the exterior is finished in a typically period Austin blue with black wings, roof and swage lines. The chrome work has been finished to a high standard and compliments the exterior look from every angle. The interior is simply idyllic, benefiting from a recent retrim in leather and carpet throughout. Opening the doors you immediately pick up on some of the features such as the shaped door pockets, a smokers hatch finely placed in the roof and the beautifully shaped stained wood throughout. On the road you can tell why the Austin was up there with the best of the era, firing straight away on the button and pulling you along with ease, luring you into a state of tranquillity. This is one of those wonderful finds showcasing originality, class, quality and history. AYG 176 was first registered in April 1936, supplied new to a Mr George Anderson of Kelso, Scottish Borders. The original supplier dealer plate is still present inside the car confirming Mr R Fish & Sons, Motor Engineers of Kelso supplied the car new. The car comes with some wonderful history with lots of photographs, one of the Austin with the proprietor of the Garage who supplied the car back in 1936. Remarkably, the same family owned this car from new until the early 2000's and during the cars early life it was used as Mr Anderson's every day car. By the 1960's, the car was laid up in completely original condition. During the 1970's the owner decided to restore the Austin and from the records and photographs with the car we can see it was taken to the very highest of standards whilst still retaining its wonderful original leather upholstery. It's clear that from owning the car from new, real passion wentinto the restoration and the result of the renovation was a multi show winning example. The Austin was a regular 'concours' show winner and pictures of multiple awards and trophies next to the car are present in the history file. During the 1980's the car attended and won The Borders Vintage Automobile Club Concours d'Elegance several times and nine individual trophies can be seen in one of the many old photographs with the car. The Austin was driven to events all over the North and by the mid to late 1980's the Austin was handed down from the cars only owner to his daughter and son in law, also in Kelso. In 2007 the original owner's daughter and son in law decided to sell the Austin after more than 70 years in the family. With its new owner the Austin was treated to an engine rebuild (invoice with the file), new carpets, the original leather was carefully treated, some paintwork detailing carried out and a new exhaust system fitted. AYG 176 was then on the show circuit in South Yorkshire but in2016 after nine years the elderly owner decided to part with the car. In true show quality, collector's car condition, the Austin was sold to a meticulous, prominent Yorkshire based collector who has kept the car on display in his multi car collection motor house. The Austin has been kept in impeccable condition and used just several times over the past three years. The car has arrived with us in beautiful condition and is of the very best pre-war Austin's we have come across. The bodywork is excellent, the paintwork is of a very high standard, as is chrome work, the engine bay and the interior is just wonderful retaining so much originality. The car is absolutely right in every respect. The rebuilt engine is in excellent order, the Austin is very strong and drives very well indeed. This very special car has wonderful provenance and history, still retains its original registration mark, original top quality leather and comes with a huge amount of documentation to include original tax discs back tothe 1930's, MOT's dating back decades, invoices for maintenance and servicing, pages and pages of previous ownership correspondence and of course the wonderful photographs that show what a loved car this really has been. 1923 Austin 12/4 two seat Tourer with dickey - Coachwork by Mulliner Probably one of the most widely recognised of Vintage motor cars, due in no small part to the 'Gumdrop' stories for children by Val Biro, the Austin Twelve Four has survived in good numbers by virtue of its sound design and sturdy construction. This particular 95 year old example is a rarity, being reputed to be the earliest two seat model in existence. With its original coachwork by Mulliner of Birmingham, the car retains all the early features of the first 12/4 models, including 12 spoke wooden artillery wheels with beaded edge tyres, 4' track, with steering box outside the chassis, 2 wheel brakes, correct CAV lighting and the original short stroke engine. Understood to have been built at the beginning of 1923 with components stamped 1922, the chassis left Longbridge to go to Mulliner on 26th January 1923. The car is said to have been restored in the 1970s and by 1990 it resided on Guernsey. Running very well, it exudes a delightful charm and patina. The correct Driver's Handbook and Spare Parts List are supplied along with many bills etc. A rare opportunity indeed! More detailed photographs and a short video of the car are available on our website. For more information and to arrange an appointment to view please call us on 07710-364945 or 07979-244195. We are based near Petersfield in Hampshire - just 10 minutes from the A3 - all viewings by appointment please.
