Big numbers and bargains at Shannons auction

Local hero cars in demand

The Shannons Summer auction which concluded this week popped up a host of interesting results. Good cars were fetching strong money. However an unusually high number of unsold vehicles suggests overall demand has dropped off a little and there is a gap between the expectations of some sellers and buyers.

Here are some of the highlights.

1982 Mitsubishi Sigma GSR (lot 250) $7600

One for the bargain-hunters. This was an exceptionally tidy example and looked ready to roll. We suspect it’s the sort of car that will get a lot of interest at any show.

1978 BMW 733i auto (lot 199) $19,000

Not so much a bargain, but a lot of car for the money. The big sixes in this series are strong.

1995 Mazda RX-7 SP coupe (lot 260) $130,000

Proof that the right car in great shape will always pull decent money.

1964 Volvo P1800S coupe (lot 170) $45,500

1972 Volvo P1800 estate (lot 203) $26,500

This was a remarkable pairing and would have made a solid score for the Volvo collector.

2000 Dodge Viper (lot 223) $99,000

Second-generation Dodge Vipers are thin on the ground in Australia and it was interesting to see this one pull serious bidding.

1996 Mercedes-Benz E220 cabriolet (lot 227) $27,000

The W124 series is regarded as a ‘bank vault’ Benz thanks to its very solid build. This was a super-clean low miler.

1962 Jaguar E-type series 1, 3.8 coupe (lot 219) $144,000

It may be a lot of money, but we reckon this looked like good value for a tidy Series 1.

2014 Ford FPV FG GT-F MkII (lot 240) $130,000

Here’s proof that late-model Aussie hero cars are starting to get serious interest. This was another low-miler.

1970 Rover P5B coupe (lot 155) $30,000

Good money for this model and of course the coupe is the one to have out of this series.

1989 Jaguar XJ-S V12 coupe (lot 264) $43,500

We’re seeing interest grow in this series – this looked like a solid result.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE, 3.5 coupe (lot 209) $245,000

Definitely a prize for any Benz collector, hence the enthusiastic bidding.

1971 Chrysler Valiant, VG Pacer (lot 152) $100,000

A good looking car that scored a very strong result.

1976 Holden Torana LX SS hatchback, 5.0lt manual (lot 246) $110,000

The owner of this Torana should also have been pretty happy.

1969 Holden HK Monaro GTS, 307 manual (lot 247) $255,000

Proof that there’s still plenty of interest in local hero cars.

1971 Ford Falcon XY GT-HO Phase III (lot 249) $451,000

This result may at first seem a little light-on for a Phase III, until you realise the car was advertised as a re-bodied example.

In case you were wondering, the top numberplate sale was for Vic 80 (lot 93), which went for a sobering $1.6 million!
