Mustangs and Jaguars dominate Shannons auction
Mini Cooper S scores high
Last night’s Shannons Melbourne auction proved there’s still plenty of money behind the local classic market, and was notable for being dominated by something other than local cars.
A large part of the marathon event was devoted to the Ian Cummins collection – an interesting mix of (mostly) transatlantic machinery, dominated by Jaguars and Mustangs, most of which sold on the final fall of the hammer.
A 1964 Mini Cooper S (lot 41) attracted plenty of interest, scoring an impressive bid of $53,000.
Top bid for the night was $660,000, for an exceptional replica of a 1955 Jaguar D-type (lot 68). However that wasn’t enough to sell the car on the spot – no doubt negotiations will continue.
A rare race-prepped 1965 Shelby Mustang (lot 57) attracted a $500,000 bid – again this wasn’t quite enough to do the job on the night.
Top sale price went to a 1969 Mustang Boss 429 (lot 67), at $330,000, followed by a 1988 Ferrari Testarossa (lot 45) at $275,000.
Jaguar collectors were out in force, bidding $222,000 for a replica of a 1953 C-type (lot 55) and $202,000 for an E-type 4.2 Series 2 roadster (lot 54).
Mid-level American cars from the 1930s aren’t always the easiest sell, but two on the night did well: a 1932 Plymouth two-door coupe (lot 52) scored a bid of $27,000, while an unusual 1934 Chrysler Airflow sedan (lot 64) pulled a respectable $42,000.
As for local cars, a 1971 Falcon XY GT 351 auto pulled a solid bid of $140,000, but that wasn’t quite enough to get it across the line. Meanwhile an HSV GTS-R (lot 86) sold for $85,000.
Shannons will be running an online auction for the remaining memorabilia lots in the Cummins collection, starting November 30.
