McQueen cars up for sale

RM Auctions in the USA has a couple of very special cars coming up for sale at the giant Monterey and Pebble Beach motorfests in August. Both were owned by screen and track legend Steve McQueen. The pick of the pair is the very pretty and unusual Sciata.

RM Auctions explains:

At RM’s upcoming Monterey auction, we will be offering two cars formerly owned by the King of Cool himself, Steve McQueen. Anyone familiar with McQueen knows he was an avid car enthusiast, often performing his own stunts when driving for a film. Off-camera, he must have thoroughly enjoyed the two following cars previously in his ownership!

First is the 1970 Porsche 911S delivered new to McQueen on the set of 1971’s iconic motorsports movie Le Mans. It is the actual car shown being driven by McQueen for the first three minutes and 40 seconds of the movie. Featuring the highest available specification offered by Porsche for street models at the time, it has only four owners from new and is in highly original, preserved condition. It is well documented with invoices and correspondence corroborating absolute authenticity.

This 1953 Siata 208/S Spider is another fine example with former Steve McQueen ownership. With its legendary "8V" power and rare, attractive and desirable spyder coachwork, it has been shown at The Quail, twice at Pebble Beach and as part of an extended exhibit at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. It is in excellent condition and would be a superb event entry for vintage racing events, including the Mille Miglia.
