Market Watch: Ferrari 348/355/360

The earliest of these mid-engined Ferraris now rate as historic cars and are eligible for serious savings on registration.

Market Watch: Ferrari 348/355/360
Climber or slider?

Not that the prospect of saving a few hundred bucks is going to make much difference to someone about to outlay $200K on two seats and a Prancing Horse.

These models followed on from the evocative 308 and 328GTS, and are yet to match demand for and or the surging prices of earlier cars.

Open-top Spider versions would once command more money than their fixed-roof equivalents, but recent surveys show the coupes catching up and sometimes overwhelming convertibles.

Most costly are F355 models which offered a big power gain over the previous 348 series (280kW vs 224kW), with six speeds instead of five and a minimal weight gain.

Most common and generally the least expensive are 360 models. These when new were slightly cheaper than the F355, with 14kW of extra power and improved around town tractability.

360 Modena coupes and Spider convertibles were current in our market from 2000-05, and during those years sold 70 to 75 cars annually.

Add to that some recent private imports and we have a market well supplied with 360 Ferraris.

Some will have done fewer than 1000km a year and these generate significantly higher prices than similar examples that have travelled 50-80,000km more.

Imports will typically be worth 30 per cent less than cars delivered through a local Ferrari agency and carrying an Australian compliance plate.

That price premium is fair enough too, given the relative scarcity of Australian-spec cars when compared with those initially sold in other RHD markets like Japan, the UK or South Africa.

RHD converted cars are scarce and not desirable, however new import regulations allow for growing numbers of cars to arrive from markets and be left untouched.

Complete service history is non-negotiable when buying a Ferrari.

Major tasks are an engine-out job and even with the motor on a stand beside the car, they demand skilled and experienced technicians who command big hourly labour rates.

Parts, although not cheap, are still available.
