It is likely that during the lifetime of some readers General Motors will stop building Corvettes or make them driverless with an electric motor. No, they won’t ever do that.

However when the last day of production does arrive, anyone smart enough to have one tucked away will enjoy some special kudos.

C2 ‘Sting Ray’ models offer a distinctive shape, decent performance from 5.3 litres and good road manners but at $70-100,000 they are getting expensive.

‘Chrome bumper’ C3 models cost more than later all-fibreglass Corvettes and do much better in the collector market.

For affordable fun in the sun, $30,000 buys a good 1970s car with lift-out ‘targa’ roof panels.
