Is there such a thing as a future classic among electric and hybrid cars?

What got us thinking on this theme was a report from our friends at Wheels mag, that: "Porsche’s pure electric Taycan outsold the 911 sports car in 2021, as the German brand posted the greatest sales in its history.

"The company delivered 41,296 Taycans worldwide, compared with 38,464 deliveries of the 59-year-old icon, while Australian deliveries of the electric vehicle totalled 531 compared to the 911’s 428.

"Taycan didn’t merely outsell the 911 because it had a bad year – that 911 total was a new high for the nameplate globally – but it appears more customers wanted the electric sports car."

Given that Porsche owners as a group are also enthusiastic buyers of classics, that got us wondering: Is there such a thing as a future classic electric or hybrid car and, if so, which models qualify?

The Taycan, through its popularity, is a clear candidate.

We know there has been some interest in this area in the Japanese domestic market, with the first-generation Honda Insight in particular gaining a following.

Of the more recent efforts, we’d nominate BMW i8 for its exotic looks and perhaps a Tesla S for its notoriety and performance.
