The large VN-VT era Holdens wore a conservative look much like the suits that bought them

‘Love them or lose them’ is advice that applies to any Holdens from the VN-VT era.

Abuse and owner apathy have seriously affected survival rates of the independently-suspended Statesman, which also plunged in value as age took its toll.

During more recent times, younger buyers who preferred the distinctive ‘Stato’ to a basic Commodores have rescued lots of surviving cars and helped revive market awareness.

Looks have played a role in the cars’ enhanced popularity, with 1990s cars characterised by squared-off wheel apertures and ‘four-light’ side windows.

Choosing a V8 over the standard V6 might involve some extra outlay, but 5.0-litre cars in tidy condition still fit under our price cap.

Some have been modified in ways that are hard to reverse and that may be a worry if you plan long-term ownership.

The collector market shows a preference for cars that have been kept in close to factory condition.
