Japanese classic

Toyota’s first-generation TA22 Celica has arguably become more desirable with age. Like a lot of models from the era, it reached a point where only the die-hards wanted one, and many were left to rust away, but it eventually found a new audience.

In our feature on the series we note: "The first Celicas were very much the fore-runners in a trend towards smaller US-style Hardtops. Nothing else of its size on the Australian market came with pillarless two-door styling, yet within a few years we had similar designs from Datsun, Mazda and Subaru."

This example is running the larger 1800 13T engine, which is a little more powerful than the original 1600. That is running a five-speed manual transmission. Other changes include Hotwire wheels and a sports steering wheel.

The owner says the car overall presents as original and sees regular use. It was repainted in 1990. Located near Albury in NSW, it’s on the market for $35,000.
