1971 Ford Falcon XY 500 Ex-Police – Today’s Tempter

XY 500 GS with factory 'T-Code' 351 Cleveland: Police-only GT-HO sleeper

In May of 2017, Unique Cars Magazine ran a special themed cover dedicated to ex-Australian police cars.

This extremely rare special order XY 500 was the well-deserved cover car; being one of eight special builds for the ACT police force.

The Teal Glow car bears the Police-only ‘T Code’ engine option: which saw the otherwise run-of-the-mill Falcon 500 equipped with the 4v 351 Cleveland, backed by the four-speed Toploader floor-shift manual, shorter tail shaft, 31-spline diff’ with 3.5:1 ratios.

You’re essentially looking at a Phase III GT-HO under the skin of a bog-stock XY 500.

The car has been fully restored, and presents better than factory. Noted specialists Re-Creation Automotivei n Melbourne handled the paint and body work; which only needed minor rust removal to start with.

The car is highly original; assembled with many new-old-stock parts where necessary, and refurbing as much of what was already there as possible.

After nearly 50 years of life, the old pursuit car has covered just 92,370 miles; and has been in the hands of four owners (one of them for 34 years) since it was honourably discharged from its law enforcement duties.

The XY is an incredibly rare beast, and has numerous trophies to show for it.

Of course, this car lands deep in the anorak of Aussie Ford collecting; and subsequently doesn’t come cheap.

The car is based in Melbourne and is listed for $230,000.

A lot for an XY 500 – but a relative bargain when you look at the going rate for genuine Phase IIIs.
