A new venue for 2016 makes for a cracking Mac's Bridge Show
Mac's Bridge Show 2016
Surveying rows of pristine cars from the crest of a gentle rise, it did seem that the Triumph Sports Owners’ 2016 Mac’s Bridge event truly had recaptured the rural serenity for which it became famous.
That was before a volley of shots rang out from across the ridge, leading you to remember that the new venue was part of the Belmont Firing Range, just 15 kilometres from the heart of Brisbane’s business district. Location aside, the array of cars was prolific as always, with around 450 vehicles representing 25 automotive clubs. With many hectares still to fill there is space for more than twice that number as participation returns to the levels of 20 years ago.
The biggest turn-outs came from the host TSOA club, supported by Jaguar, BMW and Porsche. However the award for Best Display went to a small but interesting array assembled by the Volvo 1800/120 Owners club.
Aussie cars were hard to find, with just a smattering of Holdens, Falcons and Valiants claiming a spot amongst the predominantly Brit and Euro exhibits. However, one of two superb XA GT Hardtops took out the award for Best Australian vehicle and the event also attracted a selection of 1990s locally-made Ford Capris.
Awards aplenty were distributed on the day, recognising owners’ diligent preparation of some lovely cars.
Taking home the trophy for Best Heritage Vehicle was Ross Kelly with an MG J3. He also won Best Pre-1970 Sports Car with our featured MGA Twin-Cam.
Best Competition Car was won by Tom Lane’s Ferrari 500 Tipo F2 Replica while among the road-going winners were Douglas Cooper’s Toyota MR2 (Best Japanese) and Ross Oldham’s 1960 Studebaker for Best American.
Jaguar Club stalwart Peter Lehrke secured the silverware for Modern Sports Car with his F Type but it was a silver Porsche 356 nicknamed ‘The Outlaw’ that took out People’s Choice.
