Colin Cuffe's 1960 Triumph TR3A - Reader Ride
The best of Mac's Bridge 2016: Colin Cuffe's 1960 Triumph TR3A
Triumph TR3A
Owner of this 1960 model Triumph TR3A is Colin Cuffe, who bought the car about 25 years ago and spent two years on restoration before setting out to design some ‘extras’ that make the car practical and unique.
Colin some years ago built the distinctive aluminium targa hardtop, then added removable gullwing windows. The whole unit lifts off and can be replaced by a conventional soft-top or tonneau cover. However, for longer, highway journeys, Colin appreciates the benefits of having an insulated and enclosed occupant area.
"It’s much quieter on a long run and keeps the weather out much more effectively than the original soft-top and side-screens," Colin explained. "I call it a ‘TR for all seasons’ because the car can be used comfortably all the time."
With its engine slightly enlarged, blue-printed and balanced the TR3A can easily attain 175km/h, with acceleration "way superior" to a stock version.
