2021 Market Review - Volkswagen Type 3/Kombi 1957-19900
It is six years since a rare Kombi ‘Samba’ topped $200K at a local auction and owners have been trying ever since to emulate that price. Confirmed sales of pre-1967 versions during the past year didn’t even reach our $80K average and any that are priced above $100,000 will likely to remain unsold for some time.

Utes and dual cabs in the $45-70,000 range are still in touch with reality. Post-1968 versions have more space, improved handling, even a few safety features and are value at $35-50,000. They are also found with camper conversions to help justify their place in your garage.
The Type 3 1500 and 1600 couldn’t outsell or outlast the Beetle but they make excellent ‘family classics’. Fuel-injected 1600TLE Fastbacks are climbing in value but $40,000 isn’t as yet typical.
