Race leaves Italy for the first time in over a century

For the first time in over a century, the Targo Florio will not run in Sicily after the Victorian Government secured the rights to the 2017 event.
Announced by Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Hon John Eren MP, in conjunction with Major Partner Visit Victoria, the Targa Florio Australian Tribute Classic Car Regularity Racefour-day road race will commence on November 30th.
Over 200 classic race cars from 1906-1976 are expected to tackle some of Victoria’s best roads in the 1175km event.
In keeping with its Italian heritage, Ferraris from today back to 1977 will compete in a race-within-a race, for the Ferrari Trophy.
According to Minister Eren, the event presents a significant opportunity to showcase Victoria and increase its position on the global classic and luxury car circuit.
“The Targa Florio is a symbol for the passion of cars, luxury and adventure – and we’re delighted that the organisers have chosen Victoria to stage the first-ever race outside of Italy.”
“Our love of sports and fast cars, coupled with our beautiful scenery and large Italian community, makes us the perfect host for such an occasion.”
Speaking about the four day event, The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) CEO, Eugene Arocca, said the event would further boost Victoria’s status as a major supporter of the very best events in world motor sport.
“As the national sporting body for four-wheeled motor sport, we are extremely proud to be associated with such an iconic, international motor sport event and congratulate the event
organisers, Visit Victoria and the Victorian Government for hosting the Targa Florio on some of our most famous roads,” Arocca said.
Schedule:
Thursday November 30th
Melbourne via Torquay to Geelong for the official opening
Friday 1st December
Geelong to Apollo Bay via Lorne and back to Queenscliff.
Car ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento
Saturday 2nd December
Red Hill to San Remo and onto Healesville.
Sunday 3rd December
Healesville to Melbourne CBD via Albert Park, finishing at Harbour Esplanade Docklands and the closing ceremony.
