The world’s rarest and most sought-after 1959 Eldorado Biarritz up for grabs
As it appeared on the cover of Unique Cars #256 back in 2006, this stunning 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz is for sale in Melbourne.
It’s the world’s rarest ’59 Eldorado Biarritz, and is a world-class car that’s been verified by historians as a unique and historically significant piece of Americana motoring.
A sought-after collectible in any guise, the ’59 Eldorado Biarritz was the zenith of luxury and automotive technology. It was the most expensive convertible on the planet at the time, surpassing even Rolls Royce.
As delivered from factory, the car bears the most desired and rarest factory inclusions: a one-off survivor and the best-of-the-best example.
Within classic Caddy circles, the unique cars is known as a “triple Persian”; an elusive and rare factory specification as ordered. The car is the only-documented survivor finished in factory ordered Persian Sand paint (VIN code 98), matched with Persian Sand ‘bronze’ interior (Vin code 18B), and topped off with matching “Prairie Plumb” convertible top (Vin code 3B).
In addition, the car was factory specified with the incredibly rare Biarritz Buck Seats, available as an option on the Biarritz model only; as well as the full suite of factory options including air-con, cruise-control, power seats, windows and central locking, Q engine with triple carburettors, even auto-dipping ‘Autronic-Eye’ headlights.
Our own valuation expert, Cliff Chambers wrote of the Biarritz: “There will never again be a car like the astonishing 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. General Motors certainly won’t make one, nor will Maybach or Rolls-Royce or even the prone-to-excess Bugatti. In 1959 form, the Biarritz took every rule of design restraint, every tenet of styling convention and tossed them deep into the freezing lakes that border America’s `Motor City.”
1320 1959 Eldorado Biarritz Convertibles were produced, and just 325 documented survivors remain.
This car was previously unknown to prior to the last ten years – with Eldorado expert Bill Refakis stating: “In 25 years of research… I have found one complete intact car, triple persian (sand) with buckets and factory a/c, e-h-k body tag”.
The car’s history is fully documented since new, and comes with original warranty book, a copy of the factory build sheet, a 14-year collection of factory and dealer literature, data books, shop manuals, and much much more.
The car currently still resides in Melbourne, but is listed on eBay America for US$250,000 (AU$353,325).
While it’s a high-price indeed, the car is easily comparable (in some cases, more affordable) to other rare-specification Muscle Cars, with rare Shelbys frequently fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars on the US market.
