Toyota Corona 1600 GT-5 – today’s tempter

Rare twin-cam

We sometimes forget that while the sixties featured some hugely desirable performance cars from UK, Europe and USA, Japan wasn’t exactly sitting around twiddling its proverbial thumbs. You’ll find no better example than this, a rare (particularly in this country) 1967 Toyota Corona 1600 GT-5.

Apart from the quirky two-door ‘shovel-nose’ body shape, the main highlight is under the bonnet. There’s a twin-cam 1600 four designed by Yamaha, fed by two twin-choke carburettors. That lot claimed 100 horses.

In combination with the five-speed manual trans, that was enough to make this a very lively car.

This example claims a recent engine rebuild and fresh interior, which is typical 60s sports car.

It’s being auctioned by Shannons (lot 132) from April 13 and carries an estimate of $30-38,000.
