Today’s Lloyds classic car auction – our picks

Rich pickings regardless of your budget

Today’s Lloyds classic car auction in Queensland as always has an eclectic mix of gear, and we reckon there are a few highlights.

Lot 71: Shelby Mustang

For us the star is the 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500. It’s a fastback with the 428 powerplant and an auto transmission, and by all reports has had a lot of time and money invested in making sure its ‘correct’.

A stunning bit of gear, it’s said to come with good provenance – critical for a car like this, which has a healthy world market. Bidding had reached $120k on auction morning, clearly with some way to go.

This car won’t be cheap, but chances are you’ll pick it up for substantially less than it would cost to source one in the USA and bring it back here.

Lots 72 & 73: VF Valiants

We couldn’t help but get interested in this pair, which would make a great start to a local Chrysler collection: a 1970 Wayfarer ute and 1969 sedan.

The sedan looks like a pretty solid car, fitted with a six and auto, while the ute has a six and manual and looks fairly complete. Track down a wagon and you’ll have the full set!

Bidding on auction morning was at $7000 and $4900 respectively for the sedan and the utility. Either would be a relatively inexpensive way to get into classic cars, even though bidding will inevitably go higher. Given the interest in locally-built machinery, you’d be pretty sure of always getting your money back.

Lot 33: Mercedes-Benz 450 SL

This 450 SL is one of those cars that would reward a little effort with a decent return. It hasn’t been in regular use for a while, but has pretty low miles. Values for the previous generation Benz roadsters have skyrocketed and we’re seeing this R107 generation firming up.

Aside from that, they’re a very solid and good-handling cruiser. Bidding on this car was at $17,000 on auction morning, and we’d expect it to move from there. Nevertheless, it could turn out to be a bargain.
