Stirling Moss to be honoured at Goodwood SpeedWeek

“Mr Goodwood”, Sir Stirling Moss was synonymous with the annual petrolhead event, and will be honoured with tributes at next month’s affair

The life of the late Stirling Moss will be honoured at next month’s Goodwood SpeedWeek, with the inaugural Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.

Formerly known as the Goodwood Revival’s Kinrara Trophy, the award has been permanently renamed to The Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy; and will see a 60-minute, two-driver race featuring the iconic 60s GT cars from the peak of Moss’ career.

The British racing legend Sir Stirling Moss passed away earlier this year on April 12, with Lady Susie Moss announcing: “it was one lap too many and he just closed his eyes”.

While Goodwood backdropped the scene of Moss’ career-ending crash in the 1962 Glover Trophy, Moss took out numerous wins at the Sussex circuit, including the Tourist Trophy in 1958, 1960 and 1961.

The inaugural Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy will take place as the final race on the Saturday afternoon, October 17, and will feature cars such as the Ferrari 250 SWB, Aston Martin DB4 GT and the Jaguar E-type.

Lady Moss said: “Stirling and I always received such a warm welcome at Goodwood from the family and the fans. He would have been touched to be remembered with a race in his name, in fact, he’d probably be raring to have a go at it himself”.

Following the race, there will be an on-track celebration in honour of Moss; with Lady Susie Moss and the Duke of Richmond taking to the circuit in the Rob Walker Racing Ferrari 250GT SWB which Moss drove to victory at the Goodwood 1960 Tourist Trophy. Following that, there will be a live performance from Mark Knopfler, former Dire Straits frontman and long-time friend of Moss.

The Duke of Richmond continued: “Stirling Moss was known as ‘Mr Goodwood’. More than anything, though, he was our friend and played a huge part in our history. We miss him terribly and felt there could be no better way of recognising this than by naming a race in his honour”.
