Lots of happy Christmas shoppers with 37 of 48 cars sold
Last night’s Shannons auction in Melbourne seems to reflect recent trends, of perhaps lower ceiling prices, but yielding strong sell-throughs for solid money.
Out of 48 cars, just 11 failed to find new homes. Certain hero cars continue to fetch big money, but it’s the mid-range that’s most strongly represented.
At the top end of town, Lot 64 saw an immaculate blue-chip 1965 Porsche 356C Cabriolet fetch $236,000; closely followed by Lot 57, a gorgeous and stately 1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith Gurney Nutting Sedanca Coupe selling for $190,000.
Interestingly, a 1970 Ford Falcon XY GT (Lot 65) failed to sell after opening at $140,000 with the room going quiet after two bids raising the top bid to $150,000.
Looking under six-figures, a rare 1-of-500 BMW E30 M3 Evo II (Lot 63) represented an astute purchase for one lucky driving enthusiast. A rare and desirable model never delivered to Australia, its right-hand drive conversion may have affected its long-term global value, but in turn made for a great value-buy for what should be a six-figure car all day.
In the mid-range, a genuine K-Code 351 ZF Fairlane (Lot 66) looked like great buying for $21,000 and an early HDT Brock VK SS fetched a solid $35,000.
Other surprising highlights were a 2006 HSV GTO (Lot 48) fetching $79,000 and the most immaculate 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Coupe (Lot 30) you’ll ever find sold for a brow-raising $86,000.
