Big field of 49 cars sees 11 cars failing to find a home: with some outstanding results
Shannons’ latest classic car auction occurred last night in Melbourne, with a significantly larger-than-usual field of 49 cars up for grabs.
By the night’s close, just 11 cars Passed In yielding an ultimate sell-through rate of 88%.
A few cars left unsold surprised us, as what we originally thought would have been rather safe buys.
Lot 69 saw a bona-fide one-owner VH Chrysler Charger XL in exceedingly well-kept and original condition. With a pre-auction Guiding Range of $45,000-$55,000; bidding opened at $40,000 but shortly topped out at $44,000. Perhaps that wasn’t enough to cut “Hot Mustard” under further negotiations.
One of the big-ticket items that was very much a talking point in the office was Lot 52: a HDT VK Group A ‘Blue Meanie’, coming from long-term ownership with low mileage (73,805kms) and an even lower build number, #006!
It fetched a healthy $145,000, originally estimated to land between $140,000-$155,000. Solid buying in our opinion as Blue Meanie’s have come down a lot from the $175,000+ they were fetching just six months ago.
In stark contrast to what many people say is a currently-soft market: Lot 71 saw an, albeit very clean and original, XY GT fetch an eye-watering $370,000. We don’t know about you, but we’d take the fully-restored 190SL Benz (Lot 63) at $267,000 and six-figures of change.
At the more affordable end, Lot 9 saw one of the cars that we were unanimously excited about: a 1989 Toyota MkIII Supra Turbo Targa. It was most pristine example we’ve ever seen with just 60,356kms travelled and virtually as-new condition.
With a reasonable pre-auction estimate of $15,000 to $20,000 (and up for No Reserve), we could see it going cheap or blowing out beyond the top end. In the end, it sold for $27,000.
