Just nine cars failed to sell, with some surprising results throughout
Shannons’ latest auction took place in Melbourne last night, with 46 cars on offer and 23 were up for no reserve; there was something for everyone with many cars finding new homes.
Just nine vehicles passed in, with some surprising results throughout.
Someone will have their hands full with a project, as Lot 6 saw a 1974 Toyota Celica TA22 picked up for $8,000. Restored examples will easily fetch $20,000-$30,000 so the new owner of this little Celica should have plenty left in the budget for a much-needed freshen up.
Lot 17 saw a pristine 1960 Jaguar Mk IX 3.8 Saloon cross the block. Originally estimated to fetch between $14,000-$18,000, the slick Jag fetched double that with an ultimate selling price of $32,000.
Lot 50 saw another Jaguar in outstanding condition, with a 1988 Jaguar XJS V12 Coupe selling for a solid $17,000; just scraping into its pre-auction estimate of $16,000-$22,000. Guido still hasn’t admitted to buying it yet, but we’re not so sure…
A higher-end project was picked up, in the form of Lot 62, a 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL600. We noticed it wore a curiously low No Reserve pre-auction estimate of $20,000-$30,000 – low especially for a V12 SL600. The vehicle inspection report however, noted serious engine work was needed. With a selling price of $20,000, depending on how much work is needed – someone could have ended up with a rewarding and value (comparatively speaking ) project.
At the top-end of town, two notable cars passed in and failed to sell. One was Lot 77, a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette with the uber-desirable 427ci Tri-power combo. Lot 75, a 1976 LX torana with 355ci V8 also failed to find a new home. The final lot (78) of the night, was also the most expensive: a Strike Me Pink 1972 Holden LJ Torana GTR-XU1 fetched $183,500, $20,000 more than the next-most expensive lot (67), a Porsche 930 Turbo five-speed manual which fetched $160,000.
