Strong bidding for HZ Holden and prime Euros, plus one or two bargains
Last night’s Shannons auction in Melbourne saw some very solid results and one or two bargains go under the hammer.
A highlight for local cars was a 1978 Holden HZ Premier with 308 V8 (lot 76) that went well over estimate for a very solid $55,000. Perhaps the recent announcement of the end of the Holden name gave it a little boost.
Meanwhile there was proof you can still find good value with local chrome bumper cars, with a solid example of a 1966 Ford Falcon XP sedan (lot 75) selling for $12,000.
One of the more interesting cars on offer was lot 11, a 1986 BMW M535 E28 with dogleg manual, which deserved the strong $33,500 result.
Classic shapes are still doing well, with a 1968 Jaguar E-type 4.2 2+2 Series II (lot 69) selling well above estimate for $80,000.
We reckon the buy of the night was lot 29, a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SEC coupe that went for $11,000. This series is arguably undervalued in the market and may yet have its day.
Meanwhile buyers were keen on a couple of unusual lots. First was a very well-presented 1964 Volkswagen Beetle 1200 restomod (lot 31) that went for $33,000; The other was the 1954 Holden FJ Special sedan with matching Sports Minor caravan that went for $51,000.
Also noteworthy was the very strong result for a 1929 Chrysler 75 ‘doctor’s coupe’ (lot 22), which went for an impressive $46,000. That’s solid money for the local vintage market, but still good buying when you consider the significant costs of restoring one.
The next auctions are in Melbourne and Sydney on May 11 and 25.
