Shannons Melb Winter Classic Auction 2015
It may be stone cold miserable down south, but Shannons never fails to serve up some tasty hot morsels of classic car opportunity to warm the blood.
We start at the beginning coincidently, by raising our eyebrows to the stupidly bargain-priced 1983 BMW 635CSI, which is asking between $5000-$8000. Even with an odd silver alloy wheel, the 3.5-litre straight six E24 Beemer with that shark-nose front end in sexy JPS-style black offers a chance for the savvy, budget-conscious classic car hunter. Also in this bracket is the WB Statesman (lot 17) asking between five and eight without reserve.
The potential tax write-off for this auction is lot eight, the 1970 Peugeot 404 ute which comes in a utilitarian light green colour, with flat tray and an upgraded 2.0-litre four-pot. The following lot features another oddball classic that may be of interest to the penny savers among you. The 1500cc Ford Consul Capri, brilliant in Arctic White, is also brilliantly priced asking 15 to 20 grand for a fabulously shaped, pillarless two-door sweetheart.
Hot rodders will no doubt jump at the sub-20K bargain that is the 1923 T-bucket built by McDonald Bros Racing; and Aussie hero seekers will stroke their chins at the sight of the Monza Green XY ute for $22-28,000 and the ‘Cleveland improved’ XE ESP Ghia, also for $22-28,000. Plus there’s a ’73 Bolwell Nagari (also Cleveland V8 endowed), in immaculate condition and original metallic green paint for $50-60,000.
Vintage nuts will enjoy lots 23-27 when wire spokes and running boards will strut their arthritic stuff. A 1930 A-Model Roadster offers a bargain basement price of $14-18,000 for a gorgeous black-with-cream colour combo; and topping the old-timer tacho is an exquisite 1929 Stutz Blackhawk coupe in right-hand drive and a beautiful burgundy/black colour scheme.
The fatter wallets will itch at the black fuel injected C1 Corvette asking 70-80K, and there are two convertibles at the end of the night that will grab plenty of spotlight. We’re talking a ’58 Caddy and ’57 Bel Air, both in left-hook, demanding around the 50 grand marker. Or if you feel you need the crème de la crème, a 1920 Rolls Silver Ghost Tourer for $260-320,000 might satisfy your palate.
Other gems include a sub-30K Mustang, some British pomp from a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow for less than $20,000, a 1975 Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 which is ready for its next track day at under 40 grand. Or there’s an irresistibly tempting 1986 BMW 535i Alpina for around the 20K mark that might get you set for some sweet spring motoring once our grey skies bugger off. Although you’ll have to outbid Editor Guy Allen and Deputy Andy for that Beemer… Won’t be too hard.
